Johnny Hudgins papers, 1927-1988.

The collection contains the papers of Johnny Hudgins from 1927-1988. The papers mostly concern Hudgins professional career and include photographs, sheet music, a scrapbook, printed material and correspondence. The photographs include publicity photographs of Johnny Hudgins in blackface, photographs of his performances, and autographed photographs of other African American performers. The papers also includes Hudgins' autograph book with inscriptions from other performers of the Harlem Renaissance, musical scores presumably used during his performances, a travel account book documenting his lodgings and their cost, and a small amount of correspondence and printed material, including programs and playbills. Of particular interest is a scrapbook kept by Hudgins from 1938-1950. It contains photographs, programs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence concerning his travels and performances in South America, Europe, and the United States.

Johnny Hudgins (1896-1990) was an African American vaudeville performer and a part of the Harlem Renaissance. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 5, 1896 to Johnny Hudgins, Sr. and Minie Hudgins. He began his career in show business in Baltimore dancing in small clubs.
